Redesigning the branding identity for my hometown, Alexandria, LA

Nicknamed “CenLA” due to its location in central Louisiana, Alexandria is a city with a compassionate community and unique experience. Their downtown area holds a vibrant array of festivals, events, and holiday celebrations. Recently, the community has been pushing to elevate the appearance of Downtown Alexandria to bring in more tourism and events.

Inspiration

Before initiating the design process for a map of downtown, I visited businesses around the area that play an integral part in the success of the city. The St. Francis Cathedral, the Bentley Hotel, Tamp & Grind, and many more keep the community actively engaged. Highlighting these hot spots in a visually captivating way would greatly improve tourist traffic.

Development

For posters and other print materials, two integral landmarks were chosen to highlight how the entire downtown area can participate in fully-immersive branding. The depictions of the St. Francis Cathedral and the Bentley Hotel drawn according to the woodblock style for implementation into navigational signage. Similar to the logo, the Red River remains a signature element at the bottom of each design, which elevates unity and recognition for the main branding system.

Application

Accessory items help unify city branding into a cohesive identity. For Alexandria, a beautiful trifold travel guide, navigational signs, billboards, and street signs provide reoccurring features of the branding that increase recognition through repetition. The brand identity was designed to create a frame for everything that Alexandria has to offer.
